Making Cast Iron Tea Kettles Rust Free

Tea kettles are made of different types of materials like steel, cast iron, porcelain, ceramic, glass, copper, brass etc. meeting the tastes and preferences of a variety of consumers. Stainless steel is preferred by some because of its durability while some prefer glass tea kettles because of their lightweight and easy maintenance. Ceramic tea kettles are liked by some for their appearance and so on. The cost of tea kettles also vary with the type of material. Tea kettles made of cast iron have been around for a long time as the material itself has been there since ages. It is a preferred material for manufacturing cook ware and kettles because it is non toxic, easy to mold into different shapes and has good heat retention and diffusion capability. Cast iron kettles are also highly durable, lasting for many years.

One of the disadvantages of cast iron tea kettles is their difficulty in cleaning. Cast iron has tendency to rust and the rust inside cast iron tea kettles may be difficult to clean. The rust is formed because of chemical reaction of iron with oxygen and moisture in the atmosphere. This article gives a few tips on how to clean the rust inside cast iron tea kettles.

Kettles are meant only for boiling water

Before discussing how to clean the rust inside cast iron tea kettles, it is to be noted that tea kettles are to be used only for boiling water and not for tea leaves, pasta etc. The boiled water in turn can be used for making tea or for other purposes. A tea pot is needed for boiling tea leaves. A second kettle should be used for making pasta, spaghetti etc. This is because cast iron kettles have affinity towards absorbing seasonings and other food flavors. This can destroy the natural flavor of tea and hence at least 2 kettles should be used one for boiling water and the other for making pasta and other miscellaneous food items.

Usage of dish soap

Some people think that dish soap should not be used for cleaning cast iron tea kettles which is a misconception. In fact, dish soap is one of the best cleaning agents for removing the rust inside cast iron tea kettles. The soap solution used for cleaning should be diluted sufficiently, particularly if it happens to be made of strong chemical agents.

Olive oil and salt

After thoroughly washing the kettle with plain water to remove all the soap suds, a small quantity of common salt and a few drops olive oil should be put into the kettle. A piece of old cotton cloth should then be taken and made wet under running water. This wet cotton cloth should then be used to gently rub the areas with rust to give the kettle a comprehensive cleaning.
